Purpose
To provide a diet with a minimum of fiber and connective tissue to prevent obstruction in patients with narrowed esophageal or intestinal lumens. It has use in acute phases of diverticulosis, ulcerative colitis and other colon conditions, in some cases of esophageal varices, and after radiation to the colon.

Adequacy
Depending upon the food choices made, the diet should be adequate in all nutrients except fiber. Fiber-restricted diets are associated with small, infrequent stools and high pressure inside the colon.
